Choosing to hire a 4x4 for travelling around Iceland is the best way to get maximum, safe, access to the whole island. Here in Iceland we have jaw-dropping landscapes around every corner but some of our favourite spots are only accessible via F-roads. F-roads often have uneven road surfaces and the occasional shallow river crossing. For this reason, the only cars permitted to drive on F-roads are 4x4 vehicles.
If you are visiting us in the winter months (November - April) we highly recommend that you hire a 4x4 for your travels. Even if you don’t plan to use F-roads the chunky tires and robust construction of a 4x4 make it easier to navigate any icy road conditions, which you’re particularly likely to encounter if you plan to drive outside of the Reykjavik area, for example, to do a self-drive tour of the Golden Circle.
